Is Gold a good investment?

I am looking at Gold (or even Silver) as a possible investment opportunity, possibly to buy now and leave for 5-20 years before I sell it. I would like to know if any has experience with this and can give me some advice on it, where to buy some (probably around 1kg) or to stick to shares.

Over almost any two decade period, there are few ways to lose money as reliable as buying “precious” metals!
